While on Capitol Hill, I was continually reminded of the incredible value in staff being able to make genuine connections to the communities represented by Members of Congress. Moreover, I saw the gridlock of many legislative negotiations broken by a different thought or different approach.
I believe the staff in the Halls of Congress should be well qualified, and reflect the diversity of the communities represented by Members of Congress; diversity of culture, experience, and thought.
The ability of Congressional Staff to make genuine connections with a multifaceted group of constituents, and to provide an intellectual spark through diverse solutions, makes the legislative product better.
National Journal, Sunlight Foundation, and other organizations have documented the disparity on Capitol Hill with an eye towards solutions. I was honored to share my personal story with National Journal, and continue to work to ensure that everyone qualified has a pathway to serving our nation on Capitol Hill.
